GE U33C

#751-753 were originally EL #3301-3303, swapped to the D&H for SD45s #801-803. The U33Cs retained the EL scheme for a while, except the maroon was repainted D&H blue. They were swapped back in late December of 1975, prior to the Conrail merger and the pending demise of Erie Lackawanna. All three units were outbound in Oneonta on Christmas Day. These three U33Cs received a fresh coat of EL maroon and gray prior to the start up of Conrail.

#650-656 were ex-Conrail locomotives. Guilford renumbered #758, #759, #761, and #762 to #658, #659, #661, and #662 (respectively) in 1985. All original locos were painted in the lightning stripe scheme, and #758 was the only U33C to receive the all blue and yellow nose stripes. The ex-Conrail locomotives retained their Conrail blue for some time. Unit #655 was converted to a Super 7 for Mexico by GE's Montreal plant.

U33C #757 burned with the Binghamton roundhouse and was rebuilt by M-K. They replaced the long hood with the later style of the center door latches instead of the customary one at the top and one at the bottom. It also returned with the nose Gyralite signal light and the newer AAR control stand. #760 and #761 also received the Gyralite, but from the D&H's own shop forces. The U33Cs were still too new to be rebuilt, and therefore only the three listed above received the nose Gyralite signal light.

In December of 1987, D&H U33C 758 has been renumbered to 658 by Guilford, but still wears its coat of D&H blue. It was the only U33C to be so painted by the D&H. It is seen here in the former Maine Central Rigby Yard in Portland, ME. Brian E. Loss photo, The Garbely Publishing Company collection
